La Résidence Phou Vao in Luang Prabang Reopens After a Stunning Transformation

After undergoing a comprehensive renovation that honors its cultural heritage while delivering contemporary luxury, La Résidence Phou Vao has finally reopened. Situated on the tranquil hilltop of Phou Vao, La Résidence Phou Vao offers guests breathtaking views of Luang Prabang's UNESCO World Heritage-listed temples and sacred mountains, combined with luxurious comfort.

Following the acquisition by HMD Asia, the operator of the renowned Shinta Mani Hotels, from Belmond, the property underwent an extensive refresh led by Sanya Souvanna Phouma, a brand and heritage architect and direct descendant of the Lao royal family, to ensure its cultural authenticity. La Résidence Phou Vao's identity, uniforms, and visual language now blend Lao heritage with French lifestyle.

The uniforms transition from a striking traditional silhouette to a delicate, hand-embroidered French embroidery. Even the airport transfer reflects this duality: arrivals are accompanied by a recording of the classical Ramayana orchestra, once played for royal processions, while departures are accompanied by French gypsy jazz.

"We wanted to create a sanctuary that remains true to the unique blend of Laotian heritage and French art of living while offering contemporary comfort and elegance. Every detail has been carefully considered to convey an atmosphere of serene elegance and cultural depth," explains Sanya Souvanna Phouma.

The new design by Bloom Architects brings more light, flow, and ease to every space. Guest rooms have been reconfigured to open up views and invite natural light, drawing attention to the gardens and sacred mountains, making the landscape part of the interior.

This layered lighting scheme creates a calm and luxurious atmosphere throughout the day. Accessibility has also been thoughtfully integrated, with improved pathways, bathrooms, and room transitions.

New connected suite options provide flexibility for families and friends traveling together, now extending to private terraces with comfortable seating and a well-appointed bar, offering outdoor living spaces for dining, drinking, and quiet reflection as the sun sets. Throughout the 37 suites, lighter wood tones, green accents, and custom craftsmanship create greater clarity and warmth.

New bathrooms feature terrazzo bathtubs, separate showers, and spacious dressing areas. State-of-the-art sleep and lighting systems, along with discreet in-room technology, enhance comfort while maintaining serenity.

The property's art and storytelling highlight the heritage of Laos and the era of French exploration in the region. Works inspired by local crafts, historical cartography, and archival illustrations from 19th-century explorers Henri Mouhot, Auguste Pavie, and Doudart de Lagree appear alongside works by renowned Lao artist Tiao Nith, whose embroideries are housed in museums in Paris and New York.

The arrival experience has also been redesigned for greater ease and impact. The more open reception area offers direct views of the Phou Si Pagoda and leads to a new bar, a social hub between reception and the restaurant, as well as a new boutique showcasing local treasures.

The new La Brasserie de la Résidence offers open-kitchen dining with views of the pagoda and mountains, in what is arguably Luang Prabang's most beautiful dining destination. The menu features classic French brasserie fare alongside authentic Laotian tasting experiences showcasing the region's vibrant culinary heritage.

Guest experiences in Luang Prabang highlight the city's spirituality, marked by the confluence of the Nam Khan and Mekong rivers, inviting guests to relax and cultivate a sense of presence and Buddhist detachment. These experiences include historic walks in the old town, sunrise breakfast at a waterfall, or sunset drinks on the hotel's private yacht.

By 2026, a new fitness center, Presidential Suite, and state-of-the-art meeting facilities will be added, further strengthening La Résidence Phou Vao's position as a premier choice in Luang Prabang.

"Our goal is to redefine the guest experience in Luang Prabang. This transformation is just the beginning, and we are excited to share our broader vision to make La Résidence Phou Vao a premier destination for travelers seeking authenticity, elegance, and comfort," explained Anthony Lark, Executive Director of HMD Asia.

La Résidence Phou Vao remains the only property overlooking Luang Prabang's iconic temples and sacred mountains. The hotel offers breathtaking views and tranquility, a truly immersive experience, just steps from the UNESCO World Heritage-listed city. This redesign ensures the hotel remains a sanctuary of style and soul, connecting guests with the essence of this extraordinary destination.
